What are Course Completion Settings?
Why is this Important?
In the Wildland Fire Learning Portal, the Course Completion Settings allow the editing trainer/course developer to define the conditions under which a student is considered to have completed a course, such as completing a set of activities, achieving a passing grade, or being manually marked complete by an editing trainer or trainer.
Course Completion Settings are an important aspect of the user experience of the learning portal courses, for both students and cadre. When clearly communicated, Course Completion Settings provide students a clear understanding of what they need to accomplish to finish a course, and they provide instructors and course coordinators an important tool for course management. Until an enrolled learner meets the completion conditions established in the Course Completion Settings, the course appears on their learning portal home screen in the My Current Courses report. Once the completion conditions are attained, the course is automatically removed from My Current Courses and shows as a completed course in the user's Record of Learning.
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
A few notes for success:
- Course completion settings should be established after a course is built, but before learners are enrolled. This will help to avoid any accidental course completions, before learners have actually completed the course.
- If changes are made to the course completion settings after learners have completed a course, the course completion date for those students will be updated to the date the changes were made. This can be problematic for courses that are required for incident qualifications, as the course completion date in the user's record of learning will no longer match the date on their certificate.
- When establishing course completion settings, ensure that the settings are a true reflection of the course requirements, and that learners won't be able to "complete" the course without actually completing the necessary work. This might include selecting a number of required activities as completion conditions, setting a series of activity restrictions to guide a learner's path to course completion, or requiring an editing trainer or trainer to mark learners complete.
