Instructions to set Course Completion Settings
Why is this Important?
In the Wildland Fire Learning Portal, the Course Completion Settings allow the editing trainer/course developer to define the conditions under which a student is considered to have completed a course, such as completing a set of activities, achieving a passing grade, or being manually marked complete by an editing trainer or trainer.
Course completion settings should be established after a course is built, but before learners are enrolled. This will help to avoid any accidental course completions, before learners have actually completed the course.
Until an enrolled learner meets the completion conditions established in the Course Completion Settings, the course appears on their Learning Portal home screen in the My Current Courses report. Once the completion conditions are attained, the course is automatically removed from My Current Courses and shows as a completed course in the user's Record of Learning.
If changes are made to the course completion settings after learners have completed a course, the course completion date for those students will be updated to the date the changes were made. This can be problematic for courses that are required for incident qualifications, as the course completion date in the user's record of learning will no longer match the date on their certificate.
Please note: If you have enabled the transfer of completion data from your course to IRWIN, and completion data has already transferred, unlocking completion settings and deleting existing completions will result in duplicate records sent to IRWIN.
Course completion settings should be a true reflection of course requirements, and they should prevent a learner from being marked "complete" before actually completing the course work.
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
To set course completion settings:
- Turn on editing.
- Click on “More”.
- Click on “Course completion”.
From here you can choose whether:
-
Course is complete when ALL conditions are met.
- Learner must complete every condition that you have selected before the course will be marked as completed.
OR
-
Course is complete when ANY of the conditions are met.
- As soon as one of the conditions has been completed, the course will be marked as completed.
First Condition: Activity Completion
If you decide that a learner must complete an activity, you can select: all, none, one, or several activities.
- Select the activities.
-
You can choose:
- ALL of the selected activities must be completed.
OR
- ANY of the selected activities can be completed- as soon as one of the activities has been completed, the condition has been met.
Second Condition: Completion of Other Courses
If you decide that a learner must complete other courses before the current course is considered complete:
- Select the course(s) that need(s) to be completed.
-
Choose either:
- ALL selected courses to be completed.
- ANY selected courses to be completed.
Third Condition: Date when course will be marked as complete
If you decide that learners will be marked as complete on a certain date:
- Click “Enable”.
- Select the date that it will be marked as complete.
- This can be useful for a course that may have pre-work but an instructor would like to keep the course on the learner’s “My Current Courses”.
- This should be used in conjunction with another completion condition, so it doesn’t automatically mark everyone on a course as completed even if they have not completed coursework.
Fourth Condition: Enrollment duration
If you decide that a learner must remain enrolled in a course for a minimum period of days:
- Click “Enable”.
- Select the number of days- between 1 and 365.
Fifth Condition: Unenrollment
If you decide that a course will be considered as complete once a learner is unenrolled from the course:
- Click on “Enable”.
Sixth Condition: Course grade
If you decide that a course will be marked as complete once a learner achieves a certain number of points in the course:
- Click “Enable”.
- Type the minimum number of points that a learner must achieve in a course.
- Ensure that the number of points that you have selected is less than the total number of points possible in a course- check the gradebook for these numbers.
Seventh Condition: Manual Self-Completion
If you decide that a learner can manually mark that they have completed a course:
- Click on “Enable”.
- Add the Self completion block (see below).
- When a learner clicks on “Complete course”, they can confirm by clicking on “Yes”.
- This should not be used on a required NWCG course.
Eighth Condition: Manual completion by others
If you decide that you want instructors with one or more roles to manually mark the course as complete:
- Choose one or more roles.
-
Select either:
- ALL selected roles to mark when the condition is met.
OR
- ANY selected roles to mark when the condition is met.
